Abortion Procedures

As a pregnant woman, it is your right to have a full understanding of the abortion process.  There are two types of abortions: chemical abortion and surgical abortion.

Chemical abortions use medications to end a pregnancy in its early stages.  This method doesn’t require anesthesia or surgery.  A surgical abortion may be needed if the medications are ineffective.

Surgical abortion is the removal of the fetus and placenta from the uterus through a surgical procedure.  The exact method used can vary depending on how many weeks you have been pregnant.  Anesthesia may or may not be used.  The decision for this is usually determined by the cost and what the patient is able to pay.

Abortion Risks

As with all medical procedures, there are potential risks.

Risks include infection, incomplete abortion, heavy bleeding, allergic reaction to drugs, tearing of the cervix, scarring of the uterine lining, perforation of the uterus, damage to internal organs and in rare instances death.

Strong emotional reactions can also follow an abortion.  Even if you are confident in your initial decision, you may experience guilt, anger, depression, suicidal thoughts, sexual dysfunction, and relationship problems.  These reactions have also been found to lead to substance abuse.

For some women, the emotional effects of abortion can last years or decades.
